For the first time, Phoenix Rising will play soccer in its namesake city.

In a bipartisan vote, the Arizona Senate overwhelmingly passed a Democrat-driven bill that would ban the conversion of state-maintained streets and highways into toll roads.

The pilot project at Mill Avenue and Fifth Street does allow cars to go through. But when it’s pedestrians’ turn, traffic stops entirely to allow them to safely cross in any direction — even diagonally.

Valley Metro is holding public meetings as part of a study to address the need in west Phoenix for additional high capacity transit options, like buses. Valley Metro’s Madeline Phipps says the goal is to make it easier for Maryvale residents to travel to everyday destinations.

The highest prices are in Maricopa County, where the Phoenix metro gets most of its gas from California.

The project is one of a few dozen nationwide funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and is part of the department's Reconnecting Communities Program.
