The Federal Trade Commission says the number of fraud complaints nationwide dropped last year, but the amount of money consumers lost increased.

Debt collection, identify theft and imposter scams make up the top categories. The FTC said Arizona ranked 10th per capita in identity theft and 11th for fraud and other losses.

Nationally, the median loss reported was $429. In Arizona, it was $500. Military members reported fraud losses 44 percent than the general population, with a median loss of $619.

Across the United States, people under 30 reported losing money more often than those over 70. But when older consumers were scammed, they lost more money than younger people. Consumers who were 80 and older had a median loss of $1,092 compared to $400 for those between the ages of 20 and 29.

The FTC collected complaints from 2.68 million consumers in 2017, compared to 2.98 million in 2016. However, the total loss reported was $905 million, an increase of $63 million. Learn how to file a complaint here.
