Home prices in the Phoenix area increased by 22.7 percent
in January making it the largest increase in the nation. CoreLogic’s report
released today says the change represents the 11th consecutive month
of national price increases.

The Pima County Board of Supervisors officially opposes a planned natural gas pipeline. The Arizona Daily Star reports the board voted unanimously Tuesday to oppose a planned pipeline between Tucson and Sasabe.

An alternative route to the wrecked U.S. 89, south of Page,
has problems. The dirt-surfaced Navajo Route 20 runs parallel to the
landslide-damaged highway. It is a short-term fix for some commuters, but
accidents have been reported.

The Arizona Senate has approved a bill that lets employees at some rural schools be armed on campus.

SB 1325 allows teachers and staff to carry handguns if they work at a school that’s 20 miles and 30 minutes away from the nearest police station, that doesn’t have a school resource officer, and that has fewer than 600 students.

A bill to allow school employees to carry guns is scheduled
for a hearing Wednesday afternoon in a state House committee. The measure would
apply to schools that have fewer than 600 students, do not have school resource
officers and are more than 20 miles and 30 minutes from a law enforcement
facility.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said
cases of Valley Fever in Arizona and some other Southwestern states rose
dramatically between 1998 and 2011. The CDC says there were a little more than
2,200 cases in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Utah in
1998 , but that by 2011, those states reported more than 22,000 cases.

The Sky Train is now open. The automated, free airport transportation system is running through Sky Harbor International Airport from Terminal 4 to the Metro Light Rail stop.
The Sky Train takes travelers from Terminal 4 to the East Economy Parking lot and to the 44th Street and Washington Light Rail train.
