Home prices are up, foreclosures are way down, and new home sales have spiked in the East Valley. That's according to the latest housing report from Arizona State UniversityPETER O’DOWD: The biggest surprise came in Gilbert, where new home sales in March outpaced all other sectors, including foreclosures and short sales, for the first time since the housing crisis began in 2008.

For the second month in a row, Phoenix is leading the recovery in the housing market, with an 8.4 percent quarterly increase in home prices and a year-over-year increase in March of 12.5 percent, according to Clear Capital's Home Data Index.

Federal authorities have accused four Arizona women of fraudulently collecting student financial aid money. From Phoenix, KJZZ’s Nick Blumberg has more. Three Glendale women and an inmate at the Perryville women’s prison were indicted on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and stealing public funds.

The Department of Justice will announce on Thursday that it's filing a lawsuit against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio over allegations of civil rights violations by his deputies. The Justice Department sent Arpaio a letter on Wednesday, notifying him of its intention to file suit.

Fire crews made some progress on Tuesday as they battled multiple wildfires across Arizona. The Sunflower Fire, burning 30 miles northeast of Phoenix had grown to almost 5,000 acres. Meanwhile the community of Crown King remained under an evacuation order.

The Maricopa County Treasurer is trying to block a near-million-dollar payment to Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox. A federal court ordered the payment last week, but County Treasurer Charles Hoskins wants to know if he should have a say in the matter.

Severe storms in Tucson yesterday downed power lines and caused flash flooding. The Tucson metro area saw between 1 inch and 2.5 inches of rain Sunday afternoon and evening. There were also reports of some fairly large hail, and a wind gust that reached 61 miles per hour.
