The jet black skies in remote sections of the Southwest are the perfect setting for astronomers. Besides the Palomar Observatory in San Diego and the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Ariz., there’s the McDonald Observatory in Texas, now marking its 75th anniversary.
Pinal County sheriff’s deputies have arrested 13 people in what Sheriff Paul Babeu said was a human and drug smuggling operation. Babeu said a deputy on patrol became suspicious when two cars with one or two people in them exited Interstate 8, then reentered the freeway with passengers.
Foreclosure filings in Arizona were down year-to-year, for the 23rd consecutive month, in October. Statistics released on Thursday by the home data provider RealtyTrac showed a decline of more than 60 percent from September and nearly 55 percent from Oct. 2012.
An effort by Arizona Public Service to require new solar customers to help pay the cost of maintaining the electrical grid is leading to some heated testimony before the state Corporation Commission. APS said it is only fair solar users share in net metering, rather than passing the costs to non-solar customers.
