Conditions are improving at a Phoenix VA nursing home, that’s one finding from a recent release of reports from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The reports are a reflection of annual unannounced inspections of resident care, staff interactions and the nursing home environment.

There are more than 200 standards inspected.

The report for the Phoenix VA center found one violation — some medical services provided did not meet professional standards.

No residents were harmed and the facility's overall rating improved to five stars compared to a four star rating the previous year.

“I’m very proud of our staff that we were able to get back to a five star,” said Brian Bradshaw, chief nurse for geriatrics at Phoenix VA. “It represents the quality of care we give and also a compassionate environment.”

The Tucson center had seven infractions, including not investigating the cause of residents’ injuries  and allowing residents to develop pressure ulcers.

A press release from the VA says, overall, its nursing home ratings are comparable to private-sector nursing homes.
