Passing by a narrow margin along party lines, the Republican-controlled House voted Monday to let drivers challenge a traffic ticket, lose and still get to take driver's school if they're found guilty.

By completing traffic school, drivers can wipe out the ticket and avoid having points reported to their auto insurance.

State Rep. John Kavanagh agreed the system lets drivers off the hook for a fee and a driving course, but argued, "You have to give up your right to due process. You have to give up your right to confront your accuser before a judge and have your guilt or innocence decided."

Opponents to the bill argue it will expose the already overworked courts to a flood of frivolous cases and force taxpayers to cover overtime for police and court employees.
