A bill that would create a new tuition category at Arizona’s public universities and community colleges is moving through the legislature — the Senate has OK’d the measure, which is now in the House. The Arizona high school graduate tuition rate would cover students who are not eligible for in-state tuition, including DACA recipients.

The bill’s main sponsor, Republican Sen. Heather Carter of Cave Creek, recently told The Show that it’s not geared specifically toward that population.

Carter calls this a “third option” tuition path, something she says is not covered by the Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling last year that DACA students have to pay out-of-state rates.

For more on this, The Show spoke with Reyna Montoya, the founder and executive director of Aliento — a community-based organization that works with DREAMers and other kids and teens.
