The new legislative session here in Arizona hasn’t even started yet and a spate of bills have already been introduced, including a few around education that have some teachers on edge.

One bill prohibits teachers from engaging in political advocacy in the classroom — including endorsing or opposing any political candidate or piece of legislation. It goes even further to say teachers cannot bring up any controversial issue in class that isn’t relevant to the topic of the course.

Another bill prohibits schools from closing for any reason other than regularly scheduled closures or a dangerous situation. To be clear, these and other bills have just been introduced; they may or may not become law down the road. But, they’re already having an effect on public opinion.

Katie Campbell with the Arizona Capitol Times has been reporting on this and joined The Show to talk about it.
