Motorists are being detoured for almost 200 miles between Flagstaff and Page.

Flood waters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Rosa have damaged U.S. Route 89, making it impassable. ADOT spokesperson Ryan Harding explained the problem on the roadway.

“What happened was you had a bunch of flood waters from the rain that the remnants of [Tropical Storm Rosa] dropped flood down there and they went in there and kind of hit up against the earth along the side of the highway, and it compromised the earth underneath the section of road there, so it collapsed,” he said.

In addition to flood waters, an accident in the area left one dead and several others injured. Harding said it will take at least a few days for the road to be repaired.
