The newspaper business is rapidly changing, with many local papers either making huge cutbacks, moving online or going out of business altogether. In many cases, that has affected investigative journalism and, more specifically, coverage of local government.

That led a team of researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago to look into how the loss of a local newspaper impacts a city’s finances since fewer reporters are around to look into municipal spending projects.

One of those researchers is assistant professor of finance Dermot Murphy, who joins The Show to talk about it.
