Caregiving can cause a lot of financial strain. According to AARP, caregivers spend roughly $7,000 a year on their loved one’s care. If that person has dementia, the out-of-pocket costs can be even higher.

Dana Kennedy is with AARP Arizona. Her organization helped craft the measure that gives caregivers an income tax credit. The bill passed with some changes and is waiting to be heard in the Senate.

At the end of the day, the bill that just past will be a $500 tax credit for an individual and up to a $1000 for a couple depending on how they file their taxes.

House Bill 2087 had originally called for $1,000 for an individual and $2,000 for a couple.
