The former president of the Arizona Senate has resigned a top leadership post with the state Republican Party.

The resignation of Russell Pearce came after backlash to his advocacy of mandatory contraception or sterilization for people on Medicaid.

Pearce, who had been first vice chairman of the party, resigned after his comments were denounced by some Republican candidates.

The chief sponsor of the state’s tough 2010 immigration law made the comment while hosting a radio show.

Republican Attorney General nominee Mark Brnovich said the comments were counter to individual liberties and a free country.
