Developers, city officials and the Broadway Heritage Neighborhood Association break ground on the 121-home construction project.

More than 120 vacant lots in south Phoenix will soon become new single family homes. It’s part of the city’s larger South Phoenix Village infill project.

Much of the land for the project, near Broadway Road, between 24th and 32nd streets,  was purchased through the city’s blighted structure program over the last 10 years. It’s the first infill project the city has launched since the last one finished construction before the housing crisis.

Betty Ware, the president of the Broadway Heritage Neighborhood Association, said the neighborhood played a significant role in planning.

"This is just the start of many other changes that we want to go into. This is going to bring about positive change," she said .

The city chose affordable housing developer Foundation for Senior Living to build the 121 homes. They should be completed in three to five years.
