Senate says 'no' to firing experienced teachers

April 04, 2013

The Arizona Senate rejected a bill Thursday making it easier to fire some low-performing teachers

The measure would have allowed experienced teachers to be placed on probationary status. That status allows a school board to fire a teacher with little notice.

Democratic Sen. Steve Gallardo urged members not to support the measure. He says an overhaul of evaluations passed by the Legislature last year still isn't fully implemented and lawmakers should allow that to happen before passing additional legislation.

The House had previously passed the bill on a 50-7 vote. But two Republicans joined all 13 Senate Democrats in rejecting the bill. The measure may be brought up for another vote this session.
