Eleven applicants are being considered for two new positions on the Arizona Supreme Court.

The two positions were created earlier this year, bumping the court up from five to seven seats.

Heather Murphy, a spokesperson for the court, says the commission nominating the new justices will follow the same rules as with a regular vacancy. “They will forward a slate of at least three nominees for each position. There are requirements based on party affiliation and that will be taken into consideration.”

No more than two of the three can be from the same political party. Of the 11 applicants, eight are registered Republicans, two are Independent and one is a Democrat. The commission will review the applicants and hear public comments at a meeting September 1st.
