The National Rifle Association is opening a new campaign field office in Las Vegas next week. The location’s purpose is to organize efforts to defeat a measure up for vote in November that would require criminal background checks on all gun sales, including private party gun sales.

It’s called "Question 1" and the Nevadans for Freedom Office of the NRA is working to defeat it. Question 1 is the Nevada Background Checks for Gun Purchases Initiative and, if approved in November, would require background checks through a licensed gun dealer when most firearms change hands.

Supporters of the measure say it closes a legal loophole to keep criminals from getting firearms. Nevadans for Freedom and the NRA argue it strips law-abiding citizens of their rights to own and use firearms.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that an event was held Tuesday to distribute bumper stickers, yard signs and literature supporting the NRA’s efforts to defeat the measure. The new office in Las Vegas will be its headquarters.
