Border Patrol agent accused of smuggling marijuana must stay in jail

December 21, 2012

A federal agent charged with helping smuggle drugs into the U.S. has been ordered to remain in jail.

Border Patrol Agent Aaron Anaya was on duty earlier this month between Yuma and Wellton in southwestern Arizona. Agents conducting aerial surveillance say they saw Anaya loading bundles of marijuana that had been dropped over the border fence from Mexico into his patrol vehicle.

When he was stopped, authorities say Anaya had nearly 150 pounds of marijuana. U.S. Magistrate Judge Michelle Burns has ruled the 25-year-old is a serious flight risk and granted a request from prosecutors to keep him in jail while he waits for trial.

Anaya’s pleaded not guilty to marijuana importation and other charges.
