The Arizona transportation department is reporting an increase in motor-vehicle crash fatalities. Preliminary numbers show last year 891 people died on Arizona roadways in 2015.

ADOT spokesman Doug Nintzel said there were at least 100 more reported deaths in 2015 compared with the year before.

“Usually we will try to look at three years at least as some sort of a trend, but we do know that the numbers have jumped significantly in the past year,” he said. “We need people to start focusing on safe driving behavior.”

The highest number of deaths from motor-vehicle crashes in Arizona was in 2006. That year more than 1,300 people died on highways and local roads. The final numbers, which ADOT collects from multiple law enforcement agencies, will be published later this year.
