Graduated driver’s licenses are for new drivers between the ages of 16 and 18.

The Arizona House gave preliminary approval this week to a bill that would add to the requirements to get one.

The new bill follows a single-vehicle crash in Mohave County last year involving a 16-year-old driver. Two teens died and two others were seriously injured.

The 16-year-old’s mother testified before a House Committee last month, calling for more education for young drivers.

If passed, the bill would require ADOT to create a new four-hour course. Prospective drivers would have to pass that before taking the written and road portions of the test.

The legislation awaits a final vote in the House before going to the Senate.
