Beyoncé performs a song in Glendale on August 24, 2023.

"Who run the world?" asks Beyoncé in her 2011 song with the same title as that refrain.

"Girls," is the answer from the chorus.

The megastar performed from her catalog as well as new releases during her recent concert appearance in Glendale.

That song acts as a kind of metaphor for what some have dubbed a summer of economic girl power in the Valley and across the nation, with entertainment offerings on stage and screen.

Susan Tang, professor at ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business indicated the local economic impact of entertainment offerings is considerable.

Speaking on PBS’ "Arizona Horizon" last week, she said, “We see very high hotel revenue. And also, the food consumption, clothes and other services are boosting. It’s actually pretty huge, especially for the local economy.”

Tang cited the strong local impact from two previous Taylor Swift performances held earlier this year in Glendale, and the throngs of theater-goers who turned out for “Barbie,” the summer movie blockbuster directed by Greta Gerwig.
