It was a big deal when the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced it would build its first American plant ever here in Phoenix.

It would bring high-wage jobs, give us a foothold in the growing and essential semiconductor industry and spur billions in investment here.

But there are signs that everything might not be as great as it initially seemed.

Last month, the company announced it would delay its opening here in Arizona by a year, partially because it needed to import workers from Taiwan to finish the job. But some local contractors have alleged the site is full of potential safety hazards and culture problems with the notoriously secretive company.

So, can TSMC sustain a factory here in the desert? Arizona Republic columnist Joanna Allhands is skeptical, and she joined The Show along with Editorial Page Editor Elvia Diaz to talk about it.
