Researchers at the University of Arizona Cancer Center recently received a $1.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to fund a research and training program to serve students.

The 10-week STEP-UP program gives students the opportunity work alongside mentors in laboratory or community settings over 10 weeks in the summer.

“We applied for an R25 grant with the National Cancer Institute that was oriented toward training, so this is a cancer prevention and control training grant to support undergraduate and master’s students," said Jennifer Bea, an associate professor and co-leader of the center’s Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program.

Bea said there are several aims for the program, including recruiting and retaining students and providing a multidisciplinary research experience. This is the second iteration of the STEP-UP program to receive funding.
