Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs is negotiating with Republican state lawmakers to craft a deal on whether to extend the Maricopa County half-cent sales tax for transportation.

The spending in Proposition 400 is set to expire in 2025, 40 years after it was initially passed in the Valley.

The bid to put the proposition on county voters’ ballots has faced an uphill battle despite unanimous support from those who sit on the Maricopa Association of Governments, also known as MAG.

MAG is responsible for overseeing transportation spending. The Legislature and governor have to give permission for the county to put the issue before its voters.

The Legislature has advanced two measures that would extend the tax, however for a shorter amount of time and with different priorities than MAG’s plan proposes
