The Phoenix Union High School District has approved a new safety plan and hired six law enforcement officers for the next school year.

This comes after seven months of back and forth between the governing board, its appointed safety committee and members of the community.

Phoenix Union got rid of school resource officers in 2020, but decided to reevaluate school safety toward the end of last year.

A committee was tasked with collecting input from parents, students and staff members, researching options and presenting the board with a new plan.

Those recommendations were presented at an April meeting, but the board was not ready to fully adopt it and decided to take even more time to make a decision.

During a board meeting Thursday, the board finally approved most of those recommendations, which include creating a student bill of rights, a confidential complaint process and an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Phoenix for the new officers.
