The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on Monday that last year’s mpox outbreak is not over as a cluster of cases were found in the Midwest.
Now Maricopa County health officials have confirmed the first local case of the disease since January.
The Maricopa County public health department says the person diagnosed with mpox was fully vaccinated, had mild symptoms and is recovering.
Mpox causes rashes and lesions. It is primarily spread through sexual contact.
County health officials say there is ample supply of the two-dose mpox vaccine available for those at risk, and they urge people to get the shots.
Most U.S. mpox cases have been detected in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men and with multiple partners.
