City of Phoenix
Mayor Kate Gallego honored Elizabeth White on Feb. 23, 2023. She opened Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe in Phoenix in 1964.

Some small businesses in Phoenix could receive extra attention thanks to a new initiative from the mayor’s office.

It’s called the “Legacy Small Business Program,” and it’s meant to honor Phoenix –based businesses that have provided services to the community for at least 25 years.

Owners, customers and others can nominate a business by filling out an application online or at City Hall. The application asks for a short history of the business and ownership, along with any special or historical features, and the business’ association with events or people in the neighborhood.

A press release said businesses honored will receive special recognition by Mayor Kate Gallego's office. Gallego recently recognized Elizabeth White after her 100th birthday. She opened Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café in 1964 and the restaurant at 8th and Jefferson streets remains family-run today.

"Our Phoenix small businesses not only contribute to the local economy, but they also enrich our city's history and culture,” Gallego said in a statement.
