Family members of Peru’s recently ousted president have arrived in Mexico to receive political asylum. Their arrival comes as tensions grow between the two countries.

Former President Pedro Castillo’s wife and two children arrived in Mexico early Wednesday. The family was offered political asylum in the country after Castillo was impeached and detained two weeks ago.

Their arrival comes just a day after Peruvian officials announced that Mexican Ambassador Pedro Monroy had been declared persona non grata and was being given 72 hours to leave the country. They said he was being expelled because Mexican leaders were making comments that interfere with Peru’s internal affairs.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has been a vocal supporter of Castillo, expressed disappointment Wednesday over the Monroy's expulsion. However, he said his country would uphold diplomatic ties with Peru, though he had previously said he was putting those relations "on pause."

Castillo is still detained in Lima, facing charges of rebellion and conspiracy after announcing he would dissolve the nation’s congress as it debated his impeachment. The impeachment was ultimately successful, and Castillo was arrested as he attempted to flee to the Mexican embassy. Mexican leaders say they are still offering him asylum alongside his family if Peruvian leaders will allow for his safe passage.
