Why are seniors skipping the updated COVID-19 booster?
Why are some older adults who got the first series of COVID-19 vaccines skipping the updated booster? As KJZZ reported last week, even in nursing homes, where residents were hit hard by the virus, there seems to be little desire to get this latest shot.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the updated booster appears effective at keeping older adults out of the hospital. Yet, in Arizona, only 32% of people 65 and older have gotten the latest shot.
For residents and staff in long-term care, the rate’s even lower. In fact, Arizona is last when it comes to booster rates in care facilities.
AARP Arizona is now warning of a winter COVID-19 surge. When asked why this population is skipping the vaccine, a spokesperson pointed to misinformation and COVID-19 fatigue. That said, the plan is to continue educating members through tele-townhalls.
The Arizona Department of Health Services also said that it's regularly engaged with long-term care providers, the Arizona Health Care Association and AARP Arizona to educate the public
