Just over two weeks since the midterm elections, an effort to move forward a 2024 ballot initiative for open primary voting in Arizona is already afoot.

The proposition would allow for a method known as ranked-choice voting and is being promoted nationally by groups like FairVote and in the state by HighGround.

Chuck Coughlin, president of the latter, said an open primary with RCV offers numerous benefits.

“You can choose who you want to vote for in the primary and then the top four or five candidates run off in the General [Election]. Every voter gets to rank the candidates, and the one that first gets to 50% wins,” he said.

Over 20 states currently offer open primaries. As of late this month, 62 American jurisdictions have RCV in place.

The latest statewide voter registration statistics by party affiliation for the Nov. 8, 2022, election are available from the Arizona Secretary of State's Office website.
