With the general election coming up, candidates must appeal to as many voters as possible. Arizona State University professors Thom Reilly and Jackie Salitt recently wrote a new book about independent voters and their influence on politics in the state.

On PBS’s “Arizona Horizon,” Salitt spoke about these voters’ beliefs.

“They feel the parties are more interested in preserving their own political power than in representing the constituents that they’re supposed to represent and they want things to change,” she says.

Both authors also recognize that an increasing number of independent voters includes younger people and Latinos.
