As many in the U.S. look forward to soon having access to COVID-19 vaccines for children under 5, in neighboring Sonora, it’s kids over 5 who will finally get their turn for a jab.

On Thursday, the Mexican government opened up online registration for children ages 5 to 11 across the country to get a coronavirus vaccine

Until now, the shots have not been widely available to that age group. But health officials say they have a contract for about 8 million doses of the two-dose Pfizer vaccine.

They acknowledged that those shots will not be enough to fully vaccinate about 15.4 million children in that age group.

So vaccines will begin to roll out state by state, and Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo said that he expects Sonora to be among the first states to receive doses for 5- to 11-year-olds because of high vaccination rates among older age groups.
