Gov. Doug Ducey says he believes a lawsuit filed by the Republican Party to stop early voting is “ill conceived.”

Even though Republicans passed a law in 1991 to allow everyone to request an early ballot, an attorney representing the party has argued the state constitution does not allow for it.

Ducey doesn’t think his party’s suit has much weight.

"The open court case is ill conceived and poorly crafted. It would undo the work of many Republican governors and secretaries of state over the past several decades. And I'm certain the way it's written it's destined to fail," Ducey said.

The Democratic party and two national organizations sought to intervene and defend current laws. Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, a Democrat, is defending early voting and says intervening could delay a resolution. There is no date set for the hearing.
