The Arizona House of Representatives voted Thursday to put limits on how teachers teach race and gender in schools. 

The vote comes as a part of the national debate about teaching critical race theory in schools, an idea that claims race is not inherent in biology, but a social creation. Though the specifics are debated and not agreed upon. 

The measure bans instruction that promotes any blame or judgment on the basis of race, ethnicity or sex. It also outlaws teachings that would cause a student distress or guilt due to those aspects of their identity.

The bill passed on a party line vote and will be sent to the state Senate. Democrats worry the bill would inhibit teachers ability to talk about history and current events due to the possibility of losing their job.
