Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Chad Gestson announced the district's mask mandate on July 30, 2021.

High school athletes in the Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) will have to be vaccinated or tested weekly for COVID-19. The new requirements announced Thursday also apply to coaches, staff and volunteers.

The release from the district says the student athletes and others affected by the new requirements have until Nov. 1 to show proof of vaccination or submit to weekly testing in order to participate in extracurricular activities.

The release says the vaccine and tests will be offered free of charge at all the Phoenix Union High School campuses.

PXU superintendent Chad Gestson, requiring participants to be vaccinated or tested weekly will help avoid COVID shortened seasons and reduce spread when students return from practice or competitions.

The Phoenix Union district has 22 small and large high schools.
