Saturday marks Arizona’s fourth-straight day of more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases, as COVID-related hospitalizations continue to increase.

COVID-19’s highly contagious delta variant is now the dominant variant in Arizona.

Former state health director Will Humble says this surge is mostly affecting unvaccinated young people.

“We’re in exponential growth. Young people who are unvaccinated are rolling the dice, because they may have a good outcome, or they may not. But, if you choose not to be vaccinated these days, you’re really making the choice to eventually become infected,” said Humble.

As of Friday, Arizona ranks 31st in percent of population fully vaccinated, at 44.3%.

Humble says not enough new Arizonans are getting vaccinated per day to achieve herd immunity in the near future.
