U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona says the appointment of Deb Haaland to head the Interior Department is a redeeming point for the United States.

He spoke with several tribal leaders during the second general assembly of the National Congress of American Indians 2021 Executive Council Winter Session. 

Grijalva says Haaland’s nomination is a constructive way for the country to confront its past.

“And one of the ways to confront it will be when we have that opportunity to look at a Secretary of the Interior that is indigenous, that is in charge of an agency that was essentially set up to undo Indian Country and its history," Grijalva said. 

Haaland is currently going through the confirmation process.
