On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate and House will meet in a joint session to officially count the Electoral College votes. Some Republican lawmakers say they will object to the count — a move that will likely fail.

State officials — including from Arizona — are warning that the baseless objections are sowing distrust in the voting process. 

The nonpartisan Voter Protection Program, which promotes safe and secure elections, held a briefing to discuss what to expect on Wednesday. Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs was on the call.

"And that is what makes what's going on right now so unprecedented. You can't just make stuff up. And that's what they're doing. And it is not normal or OK for anyone — not even the president —to call up a chief election official, no matter what their party, and ask them to change election results."

Hobbs also warned of the consequences of sowing doubt in the voting process. 

"And my sincerest concern about each of the legal actions that we've seen — as well as what we're hearing is going to be planned for Wednesday — is not that these folks are going to succeed in throwing out the votes of millions of Arizona and Americans, because they will not succeed," said Hobbs. "But instead, they're going to continue to create further discord and dissolution, and further exploit divisions in our communities."

Of the more than 50 lawsuits President Donald Trump and his allies have filed, nearly all have been dismissed or dropped. He’s also lost twice at the U.S. Supreme Court. 

President-elect Joe Biden will be inaugurated Jan. 20.
