Why Maricopa Community Colleges Aren't Seeing The Usual Uptick In Students During This Economic Downturn

Community college enrollment, which has been declining for a decade, saw a sharp drop off this year.

The Maricopa Community College District is one of the largest community college systems in the country.

The 10 colleges in the district saw a collective 14.5% decline this fall compared to last year. The drop is due in part to the coronavirus pandemic.

Typically, community colleges see some increase in enrollments during times of economic hardship, but that’s not happening at this point.

The Show spoke with the Arizona Republic’s Rachel Leingang about it.
