One of the big issues Arizona voters are deciding on when they fill out their ballots this election season is a familiar one: legalizing recreational marijuana. The effort to legalize was narrowly rejected by voters in 2016, and now, proponents have crafted a new voter proposition — Proposition 207 — for Arizonans to consider.

But the Arizona Republic reports one local jurisdiction is blocking the change before voters even approve it.

Last week, Gilbert voted to pass an ordinance to ban recreational marijuana from being sold in the town — except for the one medical marijuana dispensary that’s already licensed there. And the ban only takes effect if the ballot measure passes.

How is this possible? And what are the legal mechanisms that allow for it? For that and more The Show spoke with Tom Dean, Arizona Cannabis Bar Association director and vice president.
