On this episode, we welcome Annika Clark who was chosen by Creative Youth of Arizona in September as the Phoenix Youth Poet Laureate.

Clark is an ASU student and we get a deeper sense of how long her life has been connected to poetry as well as a snapshot of her work.

Plus, we talk to poet and retired teacher Joey Connolly, a transplant from the Mariana Islands who is now living in Las Vegas and brings his love of poetry and the Southwest with him.

Connolly is an old friend I haven’t actually met in person. Years ago when I lived on the island of Guam before coming to the Phoenix metro region, he resided on the island of Tinian and appeared virtually on the original version of this show.

Finally, Pueblo Indian writer and NYT bestselling author Rebecca Roanhorse has a new fantasy novel called “Black Sun” out this month.

She’s currently living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and joined us to talk about ancient astronomy and how that plays into the book.

Roanhorse also has an upcoming virtual event with Poisoned Pen on Oct. 16.

Portions of “Word” have been nominated for an Edward R. Murrow award.
