General Motors will put their big truck engines into vehicles being manufactured by a Phoenix-based electric car company.

Nikola Motors announced Tuesday it has selected GM to be its manufacturing partner for its new electric-powered pickup truck.

The Badger, a heavy-duty, fuel-cell electric pickup expected to go into production by the end of 2022, is expected to have 906 horsepower and have a 600-mile range using both battery and hydrogen fuel cells. Nikola has said pricing will start at $60,000 for the electric vehicle version and $90,000 for the one that also includes the hydrogen cell.

GM is not announcing yet which plant will assemble the Badger for Nikola or if it will be built by United Auto Workers members. Nikola has yet to make any of the heavy-duty hydrogen fuel-cell trucks it is developing.

The 10-year deal announced Tuesday allows Nikola to exchange $2 billion in newly issued stock for services and access to GM's parts and components. GM also has the right to nominate one board director at Nikola.

GM said the partnership sets up the company to compete with Tesla, the market leader in electric vehicles. According to analysts at Barron's, Nikola and GM signed a blockbuster deal that lifted the shares of both companies on Tuesday. Nikola stock added more to its market capitalization than GM did, but the century-old auto maker may have gotten the better deal in the eyes of Wall Street.
