The Chandler Unified School District is getting $250,000 from its City Council to buy 1,000 hotspots.

A number of families have told the district that their students aren’t able to participate in online instruction or communicate with their teachers because they don’t Wi-Fi, said Terry Locke, the district's spokesperson.

Chandler City Councilmember Matt Orlando proposed the city help the Chandler Unified School District buy hotspots while it continues distance learning.

“Getting a 1,000 hotspots is going to be very critical, especially the northern part of Chandler where a number of families expressed that need," Locke said. 

The funding for the hotspots is coming from nearly $30 million the city received from the Governor’s Office for coronavirus relief and recovery. 

Councilmember Matt Orlando said he wanted to help the district after learning about the challenges students face while distance learning continues. 

“This is the last piece of puzzle here is to get these kids connected, online and it’s important for them to not fall too far behind," Orlando said. 

The hotspots have already been ordered and they should arrive in a week or two, Locke said. In the meantime, the district has opened its schools to provide students with access to computers and the internet.
