Phoenix Police Department Submits Fatal DPS Shooting Investigation To County Attorney
The Phoenix Police Department says it has concluded its investigation into the Department of Public Safety shooting of Dion Johnson. Johnson was shot and killed by a DPS trooper on May 25.
Phoenix police say the trooper was patrolling the area of State Route 101 and Tatum Boulevard when he noticed Johnson’s parked car on the side of the road, partially blocking traffic.
The DPS trooper found Johnson passed out in the driver’s seat of the car. Phoenix police say a struggle then ensued and the trooper shot and killed Johnson.
The Phoenix Police Department says a handgun was recovered from the scene, but the troopers who responded, and their vehicles, were not equipped with cameras to capture videos of the incident.
On Wednesday, Phoenix police said they completed their investigation of the incident and turned it over the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
The County Attorney’s Office did not respond to a request for comment.
