If you’ve been on social media in the last several months, amid the stream of memes about working from home and the constant news about COVID-19, you may have noticed a hashtag trending: #Karen. So, you might be wondering, "What is a 'Karen?'”
The use of #Karen has become a point of debate lately — with some calling it sexist, ageist, even the new N-word.
Karen Attiah is the global opinions editor at The Washington Post. And, while she is named Karen, she is not a middle-aged white woman. She comes from a very different background, in fact, and says the #Karen trend is not racist or sexist. It’s rooted in a long history of Black oppression.
The Show spoke with her for more about it.
