At least two Valley school districts recently canceled their graduation ceremonies due to the state’s rising COVID-19 cases.

Last Thursday, the Tolleson Union High School District called off its in-person graduation ceremonies.

"With current COVID-19 and deaths spiking in Arizona and too many unknown factors, it became apparent that we would not be able to safely proceed with graduation ceremonies at State Farm Stadium," the district said in statement posted on its Facebook page

The Peoria Unified School District made the same move on Monday.

The district said in a statement that the Arizona Department of Health Services recommends that mass events like graduations do not take place at this time.

“We wanted to make sure that our students’ safety, our staff’s safety, and all of the parents and the community members that are surrounding us that they remain safe," said Danielle Airey, the district's chief communications officer.

She said about 60% of parents and students said in a recent survey that canceling the ceremonies was for the best.

As of Tuesday afternoon, ceremonies at the Deer Valley, Dysart and Paradise Valley school districts are still scheduled.

Becky Kelbaugh with the Paradise Valley Unified School District said while district officials collectively increasingly concerned about the current spike in cases being reported across the state, State Farm Stadium will be enforcing strict safety procedures and protocols for graduation ceremonies. That includes limiting attendance, requiring masks for students and attendees, keeping everyone six feet apart and no handshakes.

The Deer Valley and Dysart districts will also hold its graduation ceremonies in that venue with the same safety procedures and protocols.
