Several Sonoran City Halls Don Rainbow Colors For LGBTQ Pride Month
City halls in several major Sonoran cities are sporting rainbow colors in solidarity with the state’s LGBTQ community during Pride Month.
After a recent request from the group Visible Sonora, Hermosillo joined Navojoa, Guaymas and Ciudad Obregon, according to group President Daniel del Sol.
“It’s important for governments to also send a message,” he said.
Sonora is one of a number of states in Mexico where state laws officially ban same-sex marriages, despite a 2015 Supreme Court ruling that such prohibitions are unconstitutional.
A legislative reform effort has so far been unsuccessful, but del Sol is hopeful shows of solidarity like the city hall displays could help. Despite the state’s conservative reputation, he points to government polling that shows Sonorans are among the most accepting of marriage equality in the country.
