Former Mayor Among 4 Dead In Magdalena, Sonora, Shootout
An intense shootout in northern Sonora left a former mayor and several others dead.
The Thursday afternoon armed attack took place on the four-lane interstate on the outskirts of Magdalena, a little more than an hour's drive south of Nogales.
Two suspected gunmen were killed, along with two civilians, including former mayor Luis Alfonso Robles, according to state authorities.
“He had the bad fortune of finding himself in the crossfire, and that stray bullet found him,” friend and political ally Raul Millan said of Robles. “In spite of the tragedy, it’s important to highlight (Robles) as a good politician and Magdalense who carried the town in his heart.”
State and federal authorities arrested one suspect and seized 10 vehicles, along with weapons, according to a release.
Millan says the streets are empty in town, in part due to the pandemic, but more because of fears of insecurity.
