What Do Recent DUI Statistics Mean For Arizona?
Recent numbers from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety show a huge jump in the number of DUI arrests in Arizona from 2008 to 2011.
Meanwhile, Arizona Department of Transportation figures show the number of fatal crashes is down 33 percent from 2007 to 2014.
2007 was the year when state lawmakers, led by former senator and now Phoenix Councilman Jim Waring, sponsored tough DUI legislation. We asked Waring what motivated him.
And we talked with Toben Nelson, associate professor at the University of Minnesota. He said DUI laws have been effective, but his research indicates that limiting alcohol consumption itself would be another positive step.
