In response to the spread of the coronavirus, state Superintendent Kathy Hoffman said school leaders are analyzing their short- and long-term options.

That means figuring out what to do if K-12 schools — which Hoffman and Gov. Doug Ducey ordered closed statewide on Sunday — remain closed through the end of the academic year in May.

Hoffman said she’s fielding questions about students potentially making up school days this summer, and whether students will still have to take annual statewide exams.

"While we continue to take this one day at a time, we have been working with assessment vendors to extend the testing window as needed. We are also in communication with our federal partners in the event we need to secure a waiver for statewide testing," Hoffman said. 

Federal accountability regulations require a certain percentage of Arizona students take the AZMerit test each year.
